Are you tired yet?
I am convinced that we are living in some chapter of Revelations? Who is emotionally and mentally exhausted? Guys, the past few weeks have been straight out of a history book. I’m just waiting for dinosaurs to make a come back. That’s where I’m at right now.
Last week, I watched a video of a ten year old Black boy being handcuffed by White police, put to the floor and then a paper bag was put over his head. I was sick to my stomach. I felt my entire body desperately begging to un-see and un-feel that video. We need recess!
This year has forced us to have the tough conversations, has forced us to see the reality of our world. Race, health care, politics, climate change, our individual place/position on this earth have all taken awkward seats at that dreadful table. It feels like we are at a dinner party with the world’s worst ex-boyfriends and all exits are blocked with mountains.
BUT, 2020 is necessary. 2020 is as inevitable as Thanos. This year isn’t a mistake and if we survive it and come out in 2021 unchanged then…
Injustice is EVERYWHERE. There’s enough to go around for each one of us. Whatever your heart aches for the most (rape, racism, corruption, broken political systems, health care, domestic violence, climate change, children, sexual slavery, underground churches etc), go there and use your voice, use your platform, use your resources, use your compassion.
Of course we shall get burnt out but always remember why this problem gets you constipated, remember the people who literally can’t catch a break from their pain and sufferings and may that fuel you. Some people will ask, but all this for what? What’s the point? Is it worth it? YES, IT IS WORTH IT. Maybe we won’t see the results we want in this lifetime but we can be hopeful that those to come after us will find the world a better place.
Why is it our responsibility to make this world a better place for those who aren’t here yet? Because someone fought wars for us to have the luxury to eat ice cream at any time of the day. Someone made noise for women to vote, someone died for racial equality, someone fought for decolonization, someone fought for the rights of women and children, even Jesus Christ went on the cross for us. There were people fighting who left this world without seeing the fruits of their hard labour. Don’t waste their great efforts but let’s add to them.
Fight that compassion fatigue by taking some rest for yourself, unplug when you have to and repeat. Most importantly do not waste this year.
“Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.”
Ephesians 6:13-16 NIV
