I am going to be candid with you. When I started reading this book, I was thinking to myself, “tell me something I do not know.” I may have even rolled my eyes because that’s what pride does when we think we know so much more. Turns out I was a complete fool!  I had no room to be taught because I was too full of my own knowledge. I had a stern conversation with myself and slapped some sense into me. I had to get patient with this book. Boy, am I glad I stayed the course.

I cannot recommend Think Like A Monk by Jay Shetty enough. Do you crave for wisdom? Do you want further enlightenment? Do you desire to become a better person? Do you desire to do good in this world? Are you seeking life inspiration? If you answered ‘yes’ to any of those questions then get yourself a copy.

20 Quotes from Think Like A Monk that had us really deep in our thoughts.

1. Whenever you give out any energy—love, hate, anger, kindness—you will always get it back one way or another. Love is like a circle. Whatever love you give out, it always comes back to you. The problem lies with your expectations. You assume the love you receive will come from the person you gave it to. But it doesn’t always come from that person. Similarly, there are people who love you who you don’t give the same love in return.

2. When someone says, “I love you” we think they mean exactly what we mean when we say “I love you.” But if we think everyone is a reflection of ourselves, we fail to see things as they are. We see things as we are.

3. We often expect too much of others when we don’t have a clear sense of their purpose in our lives.

4. In every relationship you have the opportunity to set the level of joy you expect and the level of pain you’ll accept.

5. Kindness is as easy—and as hard as this: genuinely wanting something good for someone else, thinking about what would benefit them, and putting effort into giving them that benefit.

6. It is impossible to build one’s own happiness on the unhappiness of others.

7. It is better to live your own identity imperfectly than to live an imitation of somebody else’s life with perfection.

8. If you think you are too small to make a difference, try sleeping with a mosquito.

9. We may never completely purge ourselves of envy, jealousy, greed, lust, anger, pride, and illusion, but that doesn’t mean we should ever stop trying.

10. The key to real freedom is self awareness.

11. Negativity often arises from fear. Fear doesn’t prevent death. It prevents life.

12. You shouldn’t feel small compared to others but you should feel small compared to your goals.

13. Two things to remember and two things to forget. Remember – the bad we’ve done to others and the good others have done for us. By focussing on the bad we’ve done to others our egos are forced to remember our imperfections and regrets. This keeps us grounded. When we remember the good others have done for us, we feel humbled by our need for others and our gratitude for the gifts we have received. Forget – the good we’ve done for others and the bad others have done to us. If we fixate on and are impressed by our own good deeds, our egos grow.

14. Do not live in a world where you start thinking you’re so special that one person is worth your time and another isn’t.

15. We are all the same in wanting happiness and in wanting to avoid suffering.

16. Whenever you think someone’s status or worth is less than yours, turn your gaze back toward yourself and look for why your ego feels threatened.

17. In the act of criticizing others for failing to live up to higher standards, we ourselves are failing to live up to the highest standards.

18. No body is going to create your life for you.

19. We do not make progress because we do not realize how much we can do. We lose interest in the work we have began, and we want to be good without even trying.

20. Who you are is not what you say, but how you behave.
